THE combination of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is good and compatible as the two have a lot in common, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said.
The outgoing Prime Minister and Umno president said the two leaders “see eye-to-eye on most issues.”
Najib won the Umno presidency unopposed while Muhyiddin beat Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib to be the new deputy president on Thursday.
Abdullah said he was happy with the supreme council line-up as it was represented by almost all the states.
“I hope they will be able to fulfil all the promises made because we also want to reform Umno. We want to make sure that the party is going to be relevant and to ensure that Umno will become the party of first choice,” he said.
Abdulllah said the new team would hopefully be able to transform and reform Umno.
On whether he regretted failing to reform the party during his tenure, Abdullah said he would not use the word “regret”.
“I only wish that I could be together to reform the party but I am happy that there will be continuity in the effort to bring changes that are needed,” he said, adding that he was only able to conduct two brainstorming sessions after Barisan Nasional’s dismal showing in the 2008 general election.
Asked about the fact that only one woman made it to the supreme council, Abdullah said it was an unfortunate outcome.
“I had hoped that there would be more – at least three or possibly four,” he said.
As for the four Mentris Besar who lost in their bid for supreme council seats, he said it was the choice of the delegates.
On Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad’s decision to resign as Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister, Abdullah said was the Johor Baru MP’s personal choice.
On Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim’s call for the Cabinet to resign when a new leader took over, Abdullah said that this was not necessary.
