Muhyiddin: Choice of deputy president significant to all Malaysians

UMNO delegates voted for the deputy president knowing that the post was of significant importance to all Malaysians, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The new deputy president thanked delegates for their votes and all friends who prayed for him to get the post.
Saying that he was very happy with the results and for what God has bestowed him, it was nevertheless a big responsibility and a huge task.
“I have to take very serious stock of the situation. I do hope that Malaysians will endorse this team,” he said after the results were announced.
He was speaking to reporters while kneeling on stage as they were standing below waiting for his comments.
Muhyiddin obtained 1,575 votes, defeating Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib who had 938 votes. The third candidate Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam was barred from contesting for breaching party ethics.
Muhyiddin hoped the new team, when it becomes part of the Government later, would assist Malaysians of all races to move forward and undertake whatever responsibility to assist the Government and the party.
He believed that the Umno delegates were very mature in casting their votes.
“They knew that the deputy president’s post is something of very significant importance.
“They know this is not just Umno business,” he said, adding that the delegates looked to choose the person who could assist the Umno president who will become Prime Minister.
“I think they made their assessment based on my experience and I do thank them for what they have done for me,” he said.
Muhyiddin said he would be strongly supportive of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s leadership.
“I pledge to be loyal to him in whatever manner I can to strengthen the party and call upon all leaders, whether they won or lost, to close ranks.
“It is important for us to be united in the face of very challenging times. I believe it is a very big task ahead that we must bear,” he added.
On whether his victory meant that he would naturally be the new Deputy Prime Minister, Muhyiddin quipped: “I do hope so but it is up to the Prime Minister anyway.
“In any case I will assist him in whatever manner I can and it is a job that I will do my very best.”
