Hybrid solar power for Banggi island

PULAU BANGGI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said yesterday hybrid solar power would be the best option to meet the demand for electricity in this northern Sabah island.

Abdullah, who was making a follow-up visit to the island to check on the progress of the integrated agricultural project called Project Agropolitan, said that there were suggestions to integrate solar and wind power to provide electricity to the islanders.

“What I see is that electricity supplied by the solar hybrid system is enough to meet the needs of a big community. It is the best choice although there have been suggestions to use both solar and wind power when we launched this project.

“The solar hybrid system is more effective in providing a 24-hour power supply for the people here,” Abdullah told reporters after visiting the country’s largest island.

“I am satisfied with the development of various programmes although there are problems, including the shortage of water in certain areas.

He added that the soil condition on the island might not be suitable for certain commercial crops and Felcra would look into the best choices of commercial plant to be grown on the island.

Abdullah, who was accompanied by Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman and Rural and Regional Development Minister Tan Muhammad Muhd Taib, was given a briefing on the agropolitan project that was launched in August 2007.

The agropolitian project was an integrated approach towards developing rubber smallholding, livestock and fish breeding in the Government’s effort to alleviate poverty at the 447sq/km Banggi island.

Abdullah, who was given a briefing on the project by Felcra Bhd chief executive Datuk Mohd Nasir Baba, later visited a rubber plantation on a 700ha site in Kampung Batu Layar and the hybrid solar power station.

He also had lunch with the local residents during his three-hour visit.
