MACC acts against money politics as Umno polls draw
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has picked up a minister’s political secretary and more Umno politicians suspected of being involved in money politics are expected to be hauled up as the party elections draw near.

The suspect is said to have had more than RM75,000 in his car. He was stopped near a bistro in the city at 11pm on Wednesday.

His boss is among those who have qualified to contest for an Umno supreme council seat in the party polls at the end of the month.

Sources said MACC received information that the suspect was allegedly involved in money politics and quizzed him for several hours.

He was let off early Thursday morning after he had his statement recorded.

The sources said the investigations were on what the money was meant for and who had given him the money.

They said at least five people, including a top ministry official and several staff members, had been interviewed in connection with the probe.

MACC declined to comment on the matter.

It is learnt the commission was monitoring a number of high-profile Umno politicians and the word is that it is going all out to nab those involved in money politics.

The commission has been receiving more information as the polls draw closer. The Umno annual assembly will begin on March 24.

The sources said the commission means business and has already hauled up, arrested or charged several politicians, including a supreme council member who is expected to face charges soon.

The supreme council member is alleged to have paid several people between RM300 and RM500 each to ensure his victory in the polls.

The man has, however, denied any wrongdoing, saying that he was merely assisting the MACC in its investigations into money politics and that he himself was not under investigation.

Besides the supreme council member, MACC has arrested, questioned or charged 13 people.
